WAWA LOCATIONS 5

There was a previous short lived Wawa Goose that detriorated from structural problems. This picture of the replacement Goose was taken shortly after it was built and mounted. The couple in the picture is Dick VanderClift, the designer and builder of this Goose and his wife. Dick was a lake boat worker from Sault Ste. Marie, who did ornamental iron work during the winter months. His original 3 foot model of the Goose apparently sits in the Wawa Council Chambers. He submitted it in a contest, organized my the Michipicoten Town Council in February 1962. Dick won the contest. The 25 foot tall Goose cost a total of $5000. A real bargain by todays standards.

This is picture of the Goose was taken in June 2004 on its 40th Anniversary. Pictured here is Ken Lee on the left with his friend, Don Newton from Hamilton. Ken was a Town Councilman at the time the original goose needed replacement and was instrumental in selecting Dick VanderClift's model as the replacement.

This is a view of the harbour from the ore and coal dock before it was extended beyond this location. The Ship, in the background is docked at the Freight Wharf.

This is probably one of the earliest photos of the harbour. It shows that sailing ships were still in use on Lake Superior.

This picture shows a Lake Ship being off loaded. It was very likely that coal was being stored for the winter. The same ship would be loaded with sinter for transport to Sault Ste. Marie or the lower Great Lakes.

This picture was taken in 1903 and shows the harbour facilities at that time.

The date of this photo is unknown, but shows a few of the changes that happened over the years.

This photo is from a post card received by my Grandmother in December 1919. It shows Michipicoten Harbour sometime prior. In the background, at the upper left, you should be able to see the engine house situated at Brient, about a mile from the harbour.

This picture was taken prior to 1940, because it came from a post card that my dad sent to my grandparents in May of 1940. Sinterville was located southwest of the Sinterplant.

Taken in 1949, this photo of the Renault family residence is located on the corner of Ganley and "A" Streets. George Renault worked for Great Lakes Power Ltd.

Algoma Ore contracted a construction company to build homes for sale to its employees. The two houses pictured here are typical of the houses that were provided. These houses are located on the northeast corner of McKinley Avenue and Caverhill Street. At the time this photo was taken (1949), the house on the right was owned by Art Mitchell.

This 1949 photo of a company house located on the northwest corner of Caverhill Street and First Avenue was the residence of Charlie & Ina Docherty. Charlie was the Sinter Plant Superintendent until 1961. The Cauley family were next to reside here.
