ALGOMA ORE PROPERTIES
Iron mining operations started in Wawa in the early 1900's and Algoma Ore Properties, the mainstay industry in Wawa, was part of it from just before World War 2 until it ceased mining operations in 1998. The low grade Iron ore that it mined from its surface and underground operations required that it be upgraded. Besides the Mining operations, there was the Sintering operations that roasted the ore mixture to improve the iron content for the blast furnace. To everyone in Wawa, they were called the "Mine" and the "Plant"
