ACR HISTORY
HAWK JUNCTION
I took this picture in the summer of 1959. The ACR was still running passenger train service at the time. You can see the train coming around the curve. In the background, you should be able see a plume of smoke. It was the asphalt plant that supplied asphalt for the Trans-Canada Highway construction.

This picture, taken in 1953 at the Wawa train station, shows our main means of getting in and out of Wawa. The consist, was usually made up of a locomotive, a heating steam car, a baggage car and one coach. This train is getting ready to leave for Hawk Junction and Sault Ste Marie.
This picture was taken in Hawk Junction. The passenger train has arrived from Sault Ste. Marie. The last coach on this train is separated off and goes to Wawa and the "Harbour". The rest of the train continues on to Hearst Ontario.
This picture was taken July 2003. The passenger service still exists on a bi-daily basis, traveling from Sault Ste Marie to Hearst Ontario and returning the following day. Passenger rail service to Wawa was terminated in 1961.
This picture taken from the caboose, shows a train of empty ore cars heading for Wawa. The train is approaching the west side of the bridge over the Magpie River. In the background is the Sinter plant.
This photo of the ACR trestle across the Magpie River. The photo was taken in the late 1940's from a point near Sinterville.

This is a picture of a "green" ore train on the rail spur that went up to the Helen mine.
This picture shows several "green" ore cars parked on a siding near the Sinter plant.
This is the ACR train station in Wawa in 1954. The station was called "Jamestown" on the train schedule.
This is the view of the ACR station that greeted you when you were going to catch the passenger train.

The next several pictures are of a train derailment that occurred at Wawa on or about October 16, 1953.
This shows workers manually unloading the logs. The building in the background is Cochrane & Dunlop's warehouse.
The logs are being moved manually and have almost been removed.
This rail car wanted to go somewhere in its own.
This rail car did not move too far off the track.
It appears like the one rail car was removed and everyone is examining the damage.
This is Gerhard (Jerry) Wunschmann. This picture was taken in 1953. At the time, Jerry was an Express clerk. Jerry came from Germany and later returned there. While Jerry was in Wawa, he took numerous pictures. He happened on to my Wawa Photo web site and contacted me and asked if I'd like a "few" pictures. I was surprised when I received over 100 pictures that were taken in the Wawa area between 1952 and 1957. All the ACR related photos are his except the first one.
This person is Ted Hoppner, an ACR Express Agent at Wawa.
In this picture , left to right, Gerhard (Jerry) Wunschmann, J.V. Kern
and Art Nelson.
This is Danny Stares, an ACR ticket agent at Wawa.
This person is Joe Hofmann, who was a Lineman for the ACR.
This is Mr Humphrey, a brakeman, weighing a "Green Ore" car.
This is a picture of the Brient yard. It was located about a mile up from Michitpicoten Harbour..
This is an areial view of Hawk Junction. There is no date for when this was taken but it thought to be in the 1940's.
